Adam Long shoots 66 after tweaking neck at Barbasol Championship
Adam Long displayed incredible resilience at the Barbasol Championship, shooting a remarkable 66 despite suffering a neck injury. Long, who entered the tournament ranked 150th on the FedExCup standings, was determined to extend his streak of four consecutive appearances in the FedExCup Playoffs.
Despite experiencing discomfort in his neck, Long managed to card a 5-under 31 on the front nine. He initially felt the pain on Wednesday morning, attributing it to an uncomfortable sleeping position. As the round progressed, the pain intensified, prompting Long to seek assistance from a trainer on the 13th hole. After receiving treatment and having some tape applied, Long soldiered on, securing pars until encountering trouble on the 17th hole. A wayward approach shot led to a double-bogey 6, and he narrowly avoided finding the water hazard on the 18th hole.
Despite the physical limitations caused by his neck injury, Long showcased his determination and skill by sinking a 26-foot birdie putt to finish his round with an impressive 66.
With only four weeks remaining in the FedExCup Regular Season, Long currently sits outside the top 70, 363 points behind. He realizes the urgency of the situation and is prepared to do whatever it takes to secure his spot in the Playoffs. Long took Ibuprofen to alleviate the pain and tried to loosen up his neck, but he acknowledged the challenge of playing through the discomfort, especially during impact. The pain worsened throughout the day, contrary to his expectations of it improving in warm weather conditions.
This season has been a tough one for Long, the winner of The 2019 American Express, as he has yet to achieve a top-15 finish in 28 starts. To qualify for the Playoffs or maintain his status and avoid Q-School, he understands that a significant improvement is necessary. Despite the setback, Long's strong start in the Barbasol Championship provides hope for a turnaround. He planned to visit the training room after his round to ensure he remains agile for the second round on Friday.
Long recognizes the importance of making numerous birdies in a week like this and is pleased to have begun the tournament on a positive note. With his resilience and determination on display, Long aims to defy the odds and secure a coveted spot in the FedExCup Playoffs once again.
