Frankie Capan III fulfills hometown dream at the 3M Open
Frankie Capan III, a native of Stillwater, Minnesota, has fulfilled a long-cherished dream by participating in the 3M Open, a PGA TOUR event held close to his hometown at TPC Twin Cities. Despite being on the Korn Ferry Tour, Capan had repeatedly tried to qualify for the 3M Open in the past but narrowly missed out each time. This year, he received a sponsor exemption, and though it was a tough decision due to his ongoing pursuit of a top-30 finish on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List, Capan ultimately chose to compete in his hometown event.
Being at home for the tournament holds a special appeal for Capan, especially after spending months on the road competing on the Korn Ferry Tour. Balancing his participation in the 3M Open with his aspirations of gaining full status on the PGA TOUR for the next season required careful consideration. He sought advice from family and fellow Korn Ferry Tour member Kevin Dougherty before making the decision.
Capan's confidence in his abilities and chances at the tournament stems from his success during Q-School stages and his solid performance on the Korn Ferry Tour. Additionally, he will have a familiar face on his bag: his mom, Charlynn, who served as his caddie during Q-School and also during his major championship debut at the U.S. Open. Their partnership has proven successful, and Charlynn's support and presence have been invaluable to Capan's game.
While they maintain a serious approach on the course, the duo sets boundaries and tries not to discuss golf outside of tournament play. This week, however, the focus is on the family aspect of the game as Capan stays at home with his parents during the event.
Capan is excited about the opportunity to compete at the 3M Open, and winning such an event in his home state would be a dream come true. He acknowledges the importance of securing enough points in the last seven events on the Korn Ferry Tour to secure his future on the PGA TOUR, but for now, he's fully immersed in the joy and anticipation of playing in front of his hometown crowd. Winning the 3M Open would undoubtedly be a memorable and celebratory moment for both Capan and his community.
