Grayson Murray Foundation built on principles of awareness, kindness and support
Grayson Murray Foundation: A Legacy of Awareness, Kindness, and Support
The Grayson Murray Foundation (GMF), officially launched in January 2025, stands as a heartfelt tribute to professional golfer Grayson Murray, who tragically passed away in May 2024. Guided by principles of awareness, kindness, and support, the foundation reflects Grayson’s commitment to mental health advocacy and helping others overcome addiction.
A Family's Resolve
Grayson’s parents, Eric and Terry Murray, conceptualized the foundation mere hours after receiving the devastating news of their son’s passing. Inspired by Grayson’s handwritten notes outlining a vision for the GMF during his time in treatment, the Murrays found their mission statement:
"Help the ones that want to be helped but might not have the help they need financially."
Eric describes the effort as essential, emphasizing the widespread impact of mental health struggles and the urgent need for action.
Honoring Grayson’s Journey
Grayson, a two-time PGA TOUR winner, was a prodigious talent who also endured significant struggles with anxiety, depression, and addiction. A gifted athlete, his career highlights include victories at the 2017 Barbasol Championship and the 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii, where he clinched the title with a dramatic 39-foot birdie putt in a playoff.
While Grayson’s athletic achievements brought acclaim, his openness about mental health set him apart. A survivor of social anxiety and alcoholism, he shared his journey to inspire others, often reaching out to peers in need.
Launching the Foundation
The foundation’s debut week featured a traditional Hawaiian celebration of life on the beach at Waialae Country Club, where players and caddies wore “GM” buttons in Grayson’s honor during the 2025 Sony Open. The event underscored the bittersweet nature of this initiative for Grayson’s family and the GMF board, who now channel their grief into purposeful action.
Programs and Goals
The GMF focuses on several key initiatives:
- Funding Extended Mental Health Care: Ensuring access to treatment for individuals whose insurance coverage has ended.
- Anti-Bullying Programs: Addressing early emotional struggles and fostering resilience in children.
- Support for Families: Providing resources for children who have lost a parent to suicide.
- Animal Therapy: Introducing therapy dogs, inspired by Grayson’s love of animals.
A Life Remembered
Grayson’s family remembers him not only as an exceptional golfer but also as a compassionate and selfless individual:
- Kindness to Others: Carrying a fellow junior golfer’s bag after witnessing a distressing moment.
- Love for Animals: Advocating for stray dogs and spending hours playing fetch with family pets.
- Mentorship: Sharing his experiences to guide others through challenges.
“Even when he was in his darkest moments, he would reach out to other people who had the same need that he had and try to console them,” Terry Murray recalls.
Inspiring Change
The GMF has received overwhelming support, with personal stories shared by friends, teachers, and colleagues, demonstrating the ripple effect of Grayson’s openness. His family is committed to advancing the conversation around mental health and inspiring others to seek help.
As the foundation grows, Grayson’s legacy serves as a beacon of hope, compassion, and resilience, encouraging us all to embrace kindness and understanding.
