Power Rankings: The Genesis Invitational

The West Coast Swing wraps up with The Genesis Invitational, which has moved from its usual home at The Riviera Country Club to the South Course at Torrey Pines due to January wildfires in Southern California. Torrey Pines recently hosted the Farmers Insurance Open, providing a familiar challenge for the field in this Signature Event.

Power Rankings for The Genesis Invitational

  1. Rory McIlroy (NIR) – Fresh off a win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, McIlroy has two wins in his last three starts worldwide. Despite not playing at Torrey Pines since 2021, he has three top-10 finishes here, including a T7 at the U.S. Open.

  2. Collin Morikawa (USA) – Leads the PGA TOUR in fairways hit, greens in regulation, and Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green. Finished solo third at The Genesis in 2023 and T4 at the U.S. Open.

  3. Sungjae Im (KOR) – Despite some struggles recently, he has a solid track record at Torrey Pines, with two T4s and a T6 in his last four Farmers appearances.

  4. Scottie Scheffler (USA) – Hasn’t won in two starts this season but remains a top contender. Best finish at Torrey Pines is T7 at the U.S. Open.

  5. Taylor Pendrith (CAN) – A consistent ball-striker, he has two top-10 finishes this season and a strong record at Torrey Pines, where he is 4-for-4 with two top-10s.

  6. Justin Thomas (USA) – Finished T6 at the WM Phoenix Open, with a thrilling eagle-2 on the final hole. Runner-up at The American Express in January.

  7. Jason Day (AUS) – A two-time winner at Torrey Pines, he has seven top-10s in 16 appearances but finished T32 at the Farmers three weeks ago.

  8. Sepp Straka (AUT) – Defended his FedExCup standings lead with a T15 in Arizona. Won The American Express and has two top-20 finishes at Torrey Pines.

  9. Hideki Matsuyama (JPN) – While his West Coast Swing results haven’t been strong this year, his ball-striking and recovery skills make him a threat at Torrey Pines, where he has two top-10s.

  10. Thomas Detry (BEL) – Fresh off his first PGA TOUR win at the WM Phoenix Open, he has been consistent and finished T15 at the Farmers.

Course & Tournament Details

The South Course at Torrey Pines will play as a par-72 at 7,765 yards. Conditions will be challenging, with rough potentially exceeding four inches and Poa annua greens rolling at 13 feet on the Stimpmeter.

Unlike the Farmers, The Genesis Invitational is a 72-player Signature Event with a 36-hole cut. The low 50 and ties, plus any players within 10 shots of the lead, will advance. The winner earns 700 FedExCup points, $4 million from a $20 million purse, and a three-year PGA TOUR exemption.

This marks the first time since 1998 that The Genesis Invitational is not being played at Riviera, which is hosting the U.S. Senior Open. Tournament host Tiger Woods, who has never won this event, withdrew due to injury.

Weather & Conditions

Thursday’s opening round is expected to be challenging, with rain and strong southern winds. Conditions should improve over the weekend with calmer weather and temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s. When Torrey Pines hosted the Farmers, scoring averages varied greatly due to wind, making weather a key factor once again.

With elite talent in the field, Torrey Pines will test the best, setting up an exciting finish to the West Coast Swing.
