Puerto Rico’s Rafael Campos earns storybook first TOUR title at Butterfield Bermuda
Puerto Rican golfer Rafael Campos secured his first PGA TOUR victory at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, just six days after the birth of his first child. The win, which Campos described as a long-awaited dream, was marked by an emotional celebration on the 18th green at Port Royal Golf Course. This victory comes at a pivotal moment for the 36-year-old, who faced a challenging year on the TOUR, having missed 13 of his last 14 cuts and ranking No. 147 in the FedExCup Fall standings before the tournament.
Campos’ journey to victory was a testament to perseverance and faith. Despite initial doubts and a difficult season, a 9-under 62 in the third round placed him firmly in contention. He closed with a 3-under 68 on Sunday, finishing three shots ahead of runner-up Andrew Novak at 19-under 265. This triumph moved him to No. 80 in the FedExCup Fall standings, securing his TOUR card and providing job security for the upcoming seasons.
The win was not without its tense moments. Campos recorded birdies on the 6th and 7th holes but had bogeys that tested his resolve. A missed short par putt on the 14th hole allowed for a momentary opportunity for the field, but Novak and others faltered in the closing holes, sealing Campos’ victory.
This achievement holds special significance for Campos, who has been a fixture on both the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA TOUR since his initial 2019 win at The Bahamas Great Abaco Classic. It also resonates deeply due to the recent passing of Chi Chi Rodriguez, Puerto Rico’s legendary golfer. Campos expressed hope that his win would inspire junior golfers in Puerto Rico, showing that perseverance can lead to great success.
Reflecting on the milestone, Campos mentioned signs of divine reassurance throughout the week and recalled a note he had written 12 years ago, listing his aspirations that have now come true. “You don’t pray for things to happen immediately,” Campos said. “Ironically, all those things happened in their own time.”
Campos’ joy was palpable as he joined a unique group of new fathers who achieve victories soon after their child’s birth. With a smile, he said, “Now stories like that do come true apparently.” The triumph not only marks a professional high but a personal milestone, blending the joy of family and the realization of a lifelong goal.
