Tony Finau returns to elite speed off tee at Torrey Pines thanks to offseason training
Tony Finau's performance at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines is showing significant improvements thanks to his off-season training. Known for his above-average ball speed off the tee, Finau has historically averaged around 180 mph, which is well above the PGA TOUR average. However, in 2023, he noticed a decline in his speed, prompting him to seek gains in distance during the offseason.
Finau's main goal was not necessarily to compete with the fastest players on TOUR, but rather to regain his baseline speed. The results of his efforts became evident at Torrey Pines, where through 36 holes, he was tied for fifth, just three shots behind the leader. Finau's ball speed has increased to just over 181 mph, placing him 10th-fastest on the PGA TOUR, a significant improvement from his 178 mph average in 2023.
In addition to seeking distance gains, Finau also focused on his physical strength, particularly his lower body, by training with the Utah Jazz. This was part of an effort to address some knee issues he had been experiencing. His increased muscle mass and improved physique have not only helped him regain his speed but have also contributed to his overall health and performance on the TOUR.
Finau's enhanced performance is not just about his physical improvements. His experience and track record at the Farmers Insurance Open, where he has achieved five top 10s in nine starts, also play a crucial role. His combination of re-discovered distance and extensive experience places him in a strong position to potentially win at the event.
